RVs, boats and trailers represent significant investments. Winterizing them properly protects them from costly damage caused by freezing temperatures and moisture. Here’s a comprehensive checklist:
Follow the owner’s manual
Every model is different. Check the manufacturer’s instructions for specific storage guidelines.
Remove food and liquids
- Empty cabinets, refrigerators and coolers. Take out anything that can freeze or attract pests.
- Drain all water from tanks, heaters and lines. Open valves and use compressed air to push out remaining water.
Clean and lubricate
- Wash and wax the exterior to protect paint.
- Oil and lubricate stabilizer jacks and slide‑out units.
- Apply rust inhibitor to metal parts.
Treat water systems with antifreeze
- Use non‑toxic antifreeze in water lines, water heaters and holding tanks.
- Drain hoses and store them separately.
Protect power and fuel systems
- Disconnect batteries and store them in a dry place. Use a trickle charger if needed.
- Change oil and transmission fluid and fill fuel tanks.
Store tires and seals
- Clean tires, inflate to recommended pressure and apply tire sealer to prevent dry rot.
- Inspect and re‑caulk any gaps or cracks in seals.
